Our waste sector experience

The development of the waste sector in recent years, driven by stringent landfill imitations and public pressure, has demanded the development of more advanced treatment technologies. As a result the waste is being shaped into one driven by technology led solutions that are able to produce valuable by-products, such as renewable energy, whilst still yielding the desired commercial returns.

energy efficient and cost effective solutions

An extensive in-house process

At AFECO we understand the need to balance operational robustness with economics and our work is focused on meeting these requirements in the most effective manner. We have years of expertise developing and delivering organic waste treatment projects from food waste to waste woods using a variety of technologies from anaerobic digestion to advanced thermal conversion such as pyrolysis.

We firmly believe that the operational requirements of a facility should form an integral part of the engineering design solutions and we draw on our extensive in-house process, commissioning and operational experience to ensure this knowledge is captured effectively at the front end and to ensure that our solutions are operationally robust as well as energy efficient and cost effective. Innovation sits at the heart of everything we do and our engineers continually review practices, processes and technology solutions to ensure we are always able to offer the best available solutions to our clients, whether they are looking for a stand-alone work package or a complete turnkey solution.

comprehensive waste solutions

Effective solutions

Our waste heat solution will convert even low grade heat – whether liquid, steam or gas – into green electricity

Waste heat is an unavoidable by-product of many industrial processes with re-use for low grade heat not always being viable.

We have developed what we believe is the most effective solution on the market for maximizing the value of this waste heat – using it to generate electricity.

By taking existing processes that generate heat as a by-product (such as combine heat and power (CHP) plants, steam boilers, hot water systems, exhaust stacks and flares) and analysing the thermal balance, we can match these heat sources with the optimal technology to convert it into green electricity. Our technology solutions are robust and proven, using well established Organic Rankin Cycle (ORC) technology. The technology has over 70 installations worldwide with >1.2M hours of combined run time. Even at temperatures as low as 80°C, we can generate electricity in a robust and cost effective way.

Whether for use on site or for export to the national grid, the electricity generated from waste heat can provide a valuable alternative to grid-based energy, reducing both costs and carbon footprint.

At AFECO we are able to offer a range of project options, from conventional design and build to a fully funded model in which we pay all capital and operational expenditure in exchange for a long term power purchase agreement (PPA) for the sale of the electricity generated which can be purchased by the client at a discounted rate.
